Announcement about the Marine Microbial Chemical Communication Conference
From 17-20 March NIOZ is hosting an international symposium on Marine Microbial Chemical Communication. This is an international symposium with scientists visiting from all over the world. The Weizmann Institute of Science of Israel is one of the cosponsors. Since there is no official policy from our government or NWO-I on collaboration with Israeli institutes, the NIOZ has made its own careful consideration of whether to go ahead with the symposium. The directorate of NIOZ agreed to host this symposium and allow this institute as a cosponsor, as the subject matter is of core interest to our department Marine Microbiology and Biogeochemistry and is not in any way related to defence research (dual use).
It is important to emphasise that NIOZ as an organisation does not take a political position in the Israel-Palestine conflict, and as such the decision to go ahead with the symposium does not mean at all an endorsement of recent Israeli action in Gaza. Participation is open to individual scientists from all over the world, including those from Israel, since science is a means of communication that we value very highly.

Mededeling over de Marine Microbial Chemical Communication Conference
Van 17 t/m 20 maart vindt op het NIOZ een conferentie plaats over Marine Microbial Chemical Communication. Dit is een internationale conferentie met bezoekers vanuit de gehele wereld. Het Weizmann Institute of Israel is een van de cosponsoren van deze conferentie.
Aangezien er geen officieel beleid vanuit onze regering of NWO-I is over de samenwerking met Israëlische instituten, heeft het NIOZ zelf een zorgvuldige afweging gemaakt of deze conferentie door moet gaan. De directie van NIOZ heeft besloten om gastheer te zijn voor deze conferentie en om dit instituut als cosponsor toe te staan, aangezien het onderwerp van groot belang is voor onze afdeling Marine Microbiology and Biogeochemistry, en omdat het op geen enkele wijze gerelateerd is aan defensieonderzoek (dual use).
We willen benadrukken dat NIOZ als organisatie geen politiek standpunt inneemt in het Israëlisch-Palestijns conflict, en dat het besluit om de conferentie te laten doorgaan daarmee absoluut geen goedkeuring is voor de recente acties van Israël in Gaza. Individuele onderzoekers van over de hele wereld, inclusief uit Israël, zijn welkom om deel te nemen aan de conferentie, want wetenschap is een vorm van communicatie die we van zeer groot belang achten.
